Working through the intercostal space in thoracic surgery calls for both a strong retractor and long shafted graspers. The Thoracotomy Set on this page is composed with chest wall and lung procedures in mind.
On long shafted instruments, resistance to bending is critical. The instruments are stainless steel, autoclave compatible and covered for five years against workmanship defects, material faults and corrosion.
Set contents can be arranged around your clinic's own instrument list. Click the set image for the detailed list, or contact us for a different composition.
What usually decides the life of a thoracotomy set is the rack mechanism of the rib retractor. When blood and tissue debris dry inside it the arm stiffens, and a retractor forced open loses its teeth. Opening the mechanism fully during washing is the most critical maintenance step for this instrument.
On long shafted graspers the check is simple: laid on a flat surface, no gap should be visible along the shaft. A bent shaft goes unnoticed in the field but spoils tip closure and drags tissue. Such instruments can be sent for repair; keeping a spare in the set saves time on the day.
