In pediatric surgery instrument choice is not only a matter of scaling down: tissue in a newborn is thin, the working field is narrow and the weight of the instrument itself affects precision. The set on this page is prepared in sizes suited to neonatal and pediatric procedures.
On small instruments, play in the hinge shows up sooner. They are therefore machined to tight tolerances, made of stainless steel and carry a five year warranty.
Different compositions can be prepared by age group. Click the set image for the contents list, or contact us for a custom list.
In pediatric sets choosing the size is not enough on its own; the weight distribution of the instrument also affects the result. An instrument whose handle is heavy relative to its body reduces the surgeon's finger feel in thin tissue. Balance is therefore watched as closely as handle length in pediatric instruments.
Instruments used in neonatal procedures are also sterilised more often and, being small, are easy to lose in a basket. Carrying sets in a compartmented basket, fixing a place for each item and marking instruments with your own number both speed up counting and cut the risk of loss. A small lost instrument usually costs more time than a broken one.
